Immune resistance during exertion

Definition Immune resistance during exertion describes how physical load influences the defences. Moderate exercise strengthens immunity, but very heavy or accumulated exertion can cause a temporary dip (the ‘open window effect’), in which the chance of respiratory infections in particular rises. The gut plays a central role in this, since a large part of the defences sits around the gut lining.

At a major tournament a simple cold can make the difference between winning and elimination. Top athletes train for years, but around competitions they run extra risk: travel, stress, heavy load and sleep deprivation temporarily weaken the defences. This is called the ‘open window’: a short period after intense exertion in which the immune system is less alert.
