Metabolomics

Definition Metabolomics is the large-scale study of metabolites — the small molecules that arise from the metabolism of both you and your microbiome. Together they form the metabolome: a molecular snapshot of what is happening in your body at this moment, influenced by genes, nutrition, lifestyle and microbes.

In plain language

Your genes tell you what could happen; your metabolome tells you what is really happening now. Metabolomics is the science that measures the thousands of small molecules in your body — sugars, fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, breakdown products and the substances your microbes make. Together they are a kind of snapshot of your metabolism, like a photo of the traffic in your body at this moment. Why is that valuable? Because the metabolome is the place where predisposition, nutrition, lifestyle and microbiome come together in one measurable result. Two people with the same genes can have a very different metabolome, depending on what they eat and who lives in their gut. It is therefore the layer that lies closest to your current health — and the bridge between your DNA and your daily life.

The science behind

Using techniques such as mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy, metabolomics maps the entirety of low-molecular-weight compounds (typically < 1500 Da) in a biological sample. The metabolome is often described as the layer closest to the phenotype, because it is the integrated outcome of genome, transcriptome, proteome, nutrition, lifestyle and microbiome.

Co-metabolites. A considerable share of the circulating metabolites is (partly) of microbial origin — short-chain fatty acids, secondary bile acids, indole derivatives, TMAO. This makes metabolomics a key window on co-metabolism.
Targeted vs. untargeted analysis. Targeted measures preselected molecules quantitatively; untargeted explores the profile as broadly as possible.
Snapshot. The metabolome is dynamic and changes with nutrition, time of day, exertion and sleep — context is essential in interpretation.
Integration. Combined with DNA and microbiome data, a multi-omics picture emerges.
