Definition Micro-encapsulation is the third layer of formulation science: encasing actives in a matrix or coating on a micrometre scale, which protects against degradation and enables a targeted, site-specific release. The result is higher bioavailability and better survival of sensitive ingredients — the principle that timing and location often weigh more heavily than the gross dose.

In plain language

Many good substances are lost before they arrive — they are broken down by stomach acid or absorbed too early. Micro-encapsulation gives them a tiny protective coat, so they reach the right place intact and only release there.

This way you get more effect from the same substance: a sensitive culture survives the stomach, or a gut-targeted active arrives where it needs to be. It is the third step in the formulation architecture — the finest control over where and when an ingredient is released. The science behind

Micro-encapsulation encases actives in a matrix or coating on a micrometre scale that protects against stomach acid, oxygen, moisture and premature degradation, and that enables a targeted, site-specific release — for example release in the small or the large intestine. This way an ingredient reaches the place where it must do its work, instead of being broken down or absorbed too early. This is an established technique in both pharmaceutical and nutritional and probiotic science.

The result is higher bioavailability and better survival of sensitive ingredients, such as live cultures or oxidation-sensitive polyphenols and fatty acids. For probiotics, for example, a protective coating can make the difference between cultures that survive the stomach passage and cultures that do not. The principle underlines a core idea of formulation science: timing and location of release often weigh more heavily than the gross dose on the packaging.

Micro-encapsulation is layer three, on top of Smart Blending and co-encapsulation, and serves the end goal of co-metabolism: the right building block with the right micro-organisms, in the right place. After all, many microbial conversions happen specifically in the large intestine; a building block that is released there in a targeted way has a much greater chance of being converted into active metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids.
