Your gut and your brain are in close contact, and psychobiotics are about the micro-organisms that help colour that conversation. The idea: certain bacteria and the substances they make can influence how you feel — your stress, mood or concentration. That sounds far-fetched, but there is solid biology behind it: your gut bacteria help make the building blocks of messenger molecules such as serotonin and GABA, and they send signals via the vagus nerve directly towards the brain. An important nuance: the research is young and promising, but far from complete. Psychobiotics are not a replacement for psychological or medical care, and effects differ greatly from person to person and from strain to strain. What is widely accepted: a healthy, varied diet that feeds your microbiome is part of a broader approach to mental well-being — together with sleep, exercise and connection.
The science behind
The term psychobiotics (originally Dinan, Stanton & Cryan) referred to living micro-organisms with a potentially beneficial effect on mental health, and is now used more broadly for microbiome-targeted interventions that work via the gut-brain axis.
• Neurotransmitter building blocks. The microbiota influence tryptophan metabolism (serotonin, kynurenine, indoles) and the production of GABA-related signals.
• Vagal signalling. Part of the effect runs via the vagus nerve, which connects the gut and the brainstem.
• SCFA & immune. Short-chain fatty acids (postbiotics) and immune modulation influence neuro-inflammation and the stress response (HPA axis).
• Strength of evidence. Much evidence comes from preclinical models; human studies are growing but heterogeneous. Effects are strain- and context-dependent.
Psychobiotics illustrate that the brain is one of the organs at the end of a gut-organ axis, and that co-metabolism reaches all the way into neurobiology.
