‘Being fit’ means something very different for a marathon runner than for a sprinter or a weightlifter. Yet almost every sport revolves around three basic qualities: strength, speed and endurance. Picture a triangle with those three at its corners. Most disciplines do not sit in a single corner, but somewhere along one of the edges — a mix of two qualities.
Those edges form three performance axes. The alpha axis combines speed and endurance (think of a middle-distance runner), the beta axis strength and endurance (rowing, cycling uphill), and the gamma axis strength and speed (sprinting, jumping, throwing). From those combinations come derived qualities such as agility, power and strength-endurance. Anyone who knows which axis their sport lies on can tune training, timing and nutrition more precisely — because an endurance body calls for different fuel and recovery than a strength body.
The science behind
The model of basic biomotor qualities is a cornerstone of training theory. In the tradition of periodisation research (including the work of Tudor Bompa), strength (force), speed and endurance are regarded as the basic forms from which all physical performance is built. The edges of that triangle yield three composite axes: speed–endurance (α), strength–endurance (β) and strength–speed (γ). From these arise derived qualities — strength-endurance, agility, power, mobility, maximal strength and maximal speed — that are weighted differently in each discipline.
These axes are not merely theoretical: they steer how training is built up and timed. Each axis calls for its own load, recovery time and energy system, and in practice is linked to pre–intra–post timing around exertion. Sports-science research (including in Sports Medicine) describes how endurance and strength profiles differ in energy metabolism, fibre-type loading and recovery needs. Moreover, understanding is growing that the microbiome helps support those axes: publications in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition link microbial diversity and short-chain fatty acids to endurance, recovery and inflammatory balance — factors that come into play on every performance axis, but always differently.
The common thread is co-metabolism: which axis someone naturally lies on and how well training takes hold arises from the interplay of DNA, microbiome, metabolites and lifestyle together. Gene variants colour the predisposition for strength versus endurance, but training dose, nutrition, timing and recovery determine what you do with that predisposition. In this reading the alpha/beta/gamma framework is not a label but a compass: it helps tune training and nutrition to the qualities that both your sport and your body call for.
