Longevity & healthspan

EN: longevity & healthspan · related terms: epigenetics, co-metabolism, microbiome
Definition Longevity refers to how long you live; healthspan to how many of those years you spend in good health. Together it is not merely about growing older, but about ageing in a resilient and healthy way — with preservation of function, energy and independence. Nutrition, movement, sleep and the microbiome all play a part in this.

In plain language

Longevity is not only about more candles on the cake, but above all about how fit and independent you experience those years. That second part we call healthspan: the number of years in good health. You can live long with many complaints, or shorter but resilient — the goal is to make the gap between 'lifespan' and 'healthy years' as small as possible. What helps is no exotic secret: regular movement, a varied and plant-rich diet, good sleep, social connection and keeping stress in check. What is interesting is that your microbiome plays a part here — it changes with age, and a resilient gut environment is associated with healthier ageing. But be critical: many big promises and expensive hypes circulate around longevity. The most solid gains still lie in the basics, consistently sustained. This is the bridge between your microbiome today and your resilience in the long term.

The science behind

Longevity and healthspan are studied around the so-called 'hallmarks of aging' — fundamental processes such as genomic instability, epigenetic drift, loss of proteostasis, cellular senescence and chronic low-grade inflammation ('inflammaging'). The emphasis shifts from mere life extension to extending the healthy, functional years.

Epigenetic ageing. Methylation-based 'clocks' estimate biological age — an interface with epigenetics.
Inflammaging. A smouldering inflammatory tone increases with age; a resilient microbiome and good barrier can help temper it (see immunobiomics).
Microbiome & ageing. The microbial composition shifts with age; preserving diversity and butyrate producers is associated with healthier ageing.
Lifestyle as lever. Movement, nutritional quality, sleep and social connection have the most robust evidence — stronger than most supplements or hypes.

Within the Cosmogroup framework, longevity forms the SHIFT bridge: from the daily biology of today to long-term resilience. My InnerSelfie treats this at a conceptual level and without promises of life extension. This reading is supportive and observational — not a medical diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between longevity and healthspan?
Longevity is how long you live; healthspan is how many of those years you spend in good health. The goal is to extend the healthy years.
What really helps for healthy ageing?
The basics with the strongest evidence: regular movement, varied plant-rich nutrition, good sleep, social connection and stress regulation.
Does the microbiome play a role in ageing?
The microbial composition changes with age; preserving diversity and butyrate producers is associated with healthier ageing.
Are longevity supplements necessary?
The most robust gains lie in lifestyle. There is a lot of hype and more limited evidence around supplements; critical nuance is warranted.
