Precision nutrition

EN: precision nutrition / personalized nutrition · related terms: multi-omics, microbiome, nutrigenomics, individual response, co-metabolism
Definition Precision nutrition is an approach that tailors nutrition and supplementation advice to individual biology — genetic predisposition, microbiome, metabolism, lifestyle and context — instead of to universal guidelines. The premise is that people respond differently to the same food, and that advice must therefore be personal: which foods you embrace, limit or avoid, and which targeted support makes sense.

In plain language

Everyone responds differently to food. What gives one person energy gives another a dip. Precision nutrition takes that into account: based on your biology — and, where available, a multi-omics analysis of DNA, microbiome and metabolome — you receive advice that suits yóu.

It is the opposite of ‘one scoop for everyone’. Instead of a general guideline, precision nutrition shows which foods you are best to embrace, limit or avoid, and which targeted support suits your goal, your daily rhythm and your season. You do not necessarily need a test for that — even without an analysis you can make more targeted choices — but a biological picture refines the advice. Important: it is a supportive, educational approach, not a strict diet and not a medical treatment.

The science behind

Precision nutrition builds on the insight that the individual response to food varies greatly. Research into personalised glycaemic responses (among others Zeevi and Segal) showed that people respond very differently to the same meal, partly because of their microbiome composition. Genetic predisposition, metabolism and lifestyle also colour that response. As a result, a universal guideline often does not suffice: the same recommendation can work for one person and backfire for another.

To capture that variation, precision approaches use multi-omics: reading the genome, microbiome and metabolome together. Those layers are translated into practical advice, often in an embrace–limit–avoid logic per nutrition domain. The goal is not more rules, but more relevant ones: recommendations that match how your system actually responds. Such advice is emphatically supportive and educational, not a diagnosis or treatment.

The common thread is co-metabolism: how you respond to food arises from the interplay of DNA, microbiome, metabolites and lifestyle together — never from one layer in isolation. In practice, true personalisation scales best through smart combinations of existing, modular building blocks, tuned to rhythm and season: you personalise above all in the selection. This is how precision nutrition becomes living, adjustable advice that moves with your biology rather than a fixed list of prescriptions. This reading is supportive and observational — not a medical diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

What is precision nutrition?
Nutrition and supplementation advice tailored to your individual biology instead of to general guidelines.
Why does everyone respond differently to food?
Because of differences in genetics, microbiome, metabolism and lifestyle — together your co-metabolism.
Do I need a test?
An analysis refines the advice, but even without a test you can make more targeted choices.
Is precision nutrition a diet?
No — it is a personalised, supportive approach, not a strict diet or medical treatment.
