Science has made it clear that human and microbiome form one ecosystem. But what does the future hold? Classic tests are snapshots, while your biology is constantly changing. And because everyone is unique, ‘one size fits all’ rarely works. New technology responds to this. Artificial intelligence can search through vast datasets from DNA, proteins and metabolites and find patterns that remain invisible to humans. Wearables and mini-sensors can measure microbial compounds in breath, sweat or urine — monitoring without needles. And with a ‘digital twin’ — a virtual model of your biology — a diet or treatment can be tested digitally first, before you actually start it. In this way health shifts from responding to complaints to looking ahead: spotting problems before the symptoms are there.
The science behind
The first building block is AI-driven multi-omics. Artificial intelligence analyses large datasets from DNA, RNA, proteins and metabolites and discovers patterns linked to health or disease — patterns that are not visible to the naked eye. This makes it possible to distinguish subtypes of people and to understand why the same advice does not work for everyone.
The second building block is continuous monitoring. Real-time sensors and volatilomics measure microbially produced volatile compounds (VOCs) in breath, sweat or urine, making gut health and immune status trackable without invasive tests. The third building block is digital twins: virtual models of an individual, based on DNA, microbiome and metabolites, with which treatments or dietary interventions can be simulated first. By combining AI and digital twins, predictive medicine comes into view — assessing and helping prevent conditions such as metabolic syndrome years earlier.
The common thread remains co-metabolism: prediction is only possible when DNA, microbiome, metabolites and lifestyle are read together, over time. Technology accelerates that reading, but the biological logic — the whole above the individual marker — stays the same. This reading is supportive and observational — not a medical diagnosis.
