Low-fibre diet & HRV

Definition A low-fibre diet reduces the diversity and activity of the microbiome and, with it, the production of short-chain fatty acids (particularly butyrate and propionate). These metabolites support vagal (parasympathetic) tone and the gut–heart axis. A structurally falling HRV can thus be an early biological warning signal of reduced stress buffering and recovery capacity — even before complaints become clear.

In plain language

A manager under a lot of work stress sees her HRV on her wearable falling systematically — from around 70 to 40 milliseconds. By her own sense she eats healthily, but she feels bloated and tired. On closer inspection her diet contains hardly any fibre: lots of white bread, rice and quick snacks. So why is her HRV falling? The answer lies in the crosstalk between gut flora, heart and nervous system.

HRV is one of the most sensitive signals of stress and recovery. But it shows the effect, not the cause. A low-fibre diet leads to a less diverse microbiome and therefore to a shortage of short-chain fatty acids — precisely the substances that feed the vagus nerve and temper inflammation. Less of these substances means a weaker ‘brake’ on your stress system: lower HRV, higher stress sensitivity, slower recovery. The falling HRV is then not a defect, but a warning you can read and adjust — often starting on your plate.

The science behind

Heart rate variability is a validated window on stress and autonomic balance. Work in Nature Reviews Cardiology links a low HRV to increased stress and cardiovascular risk; it reflects a shift away from parasympathetic (recovery) dominance. HRV, however, only shows the state, not the underlying cause — and that cause lies more often than thought in nutrition and gut health rather than in the heart itself.

The connecting link is once again the short-chain fatty acids. Publications in Cell Host & Microbe describe how dietary fibres increase SCFA production and thereby support vagal activity and HRV, while work in Frontiers in Neuroscience places the gut–heart axis as a key player in stress regulation. A low-fibre pattern — lots of refined carbohydrates, little plant diversity — lowers the availability of butyrate and propionate, weakens the gut barrier and increases low-grade inflammation. The result is a lower HRV and a narrower stress buffer, even in those who subjectively eat ‘healthily’.

The common thread is co-metabolism: whether someone is stress-resilient or quickly becomes dysregulated arises from the interplay of DNA, microbiome, metabolites and lifestyle together. Gene variants colour the predisposition to vagal tone and inflammatory sensitivity, but fibre variation, flora diversity and recovery habits determine what you do with that predisposition. A falling HRV thus becomes not an abstract figure, but a readable signal that points to the table — and one that can often be adjusted with targeted nutrition. This reading is supportive and observational — not a medical diagnosis.
