CPV / CRAS Total is exactly that: a summarising picture that brings the most important signals together, so that at a glance you can see how someone stands overall.
Important: the total score does not replace the individual signals, it summarises them. The science behind
Composite scores stand in the tradition of systems biology and integrative physiology: disciplines which hold that the meaning of a signal only emerges in relation to the others. A composite framework bundles those layers into one read-out, precisely because isolation leads to the wrong conclusions. Such an overall picture is therefore not a new biomarker, but an ordered summary of signals that each already carry meaning in their own right.
Beneath this integrative idea lie well-described models. The concept of allostatic load (McEwen) describes how the body adapts to pressure through multiple systems at once, and how accumulating load without recovery becomes visible across a range of markers. The load–recovery balance from exercise physiology works by the same logic. A composite read-out gains practical meaning when it is read via zones — for example a risk zone, an adaptation zone and a zone of high readiness — which translate the figure into a readable decision category without losing the underlying nuance.
The common thread is co-metabolism: readiness, resilience and recovery arise from the interplay of DNA, microbiome, metabolites and lifestyle together — never from one layer alone. That is precisely why a summarising framework is useful: only when you read the layers together does it become visible why the same load leads to growth in one person and to exhaustion in another. In that sense a total score is a pair of reading glasses on co-metabolism — it speeds up interpretation, but the underlying signals remain necessary for the nuance. This reading is supportive and observational — not a medical diagnosis.
