In plain language
Two athletes, the same training. One feels strong and sharp, the other is chasing the game from the warm-up onwards. They are equally ‘fit’, and yet equally not ready. That difference is called readiness: how ready your body is now for what you ask of it. It is not a fixed talent, but a day-form that fluctuates with sleep, stress, nutrition, travel and recovery.
Important: readiness is not the same as condition. You can be top fit and still have a day on which your system asks for rest — or be averagely trained and perfectly ready to go. That is why you never read readiness from a single figure, but from several signals together. In this way it becomes visible when pushing through makes sense and when recovery is the smarter choice. Readiness turns ‘I think I'll be fine’ into a readable signal.
The science behind
Readiness builds on decades of recovery and exercise physiology. The model of the load-recovery balance holds that performance does not arise from load alone, but from the ratio between stimulus and recovery; overtraining occurs when that balance structurally tips (Med Sci Sports Exerc). Markers such as heart rate variability, sleep quality and subjective fatigue are therefore used as daily readiness signals — not because one of them decides, but because their coherence says something about the recovery status of the autonomic nervous system.
Readiness is, moreover, time-bound. Chronobiological research shows that the same person does not function equally efficiently at different times of the day: strength, reaction time and metabolic response follow a circadian rhythm. Someone may be biologically well prepared for an evening effort, but less so for an early load. Readiness is therefore not a fixed fit/unfit label, but a context-dependent reading in which capacity, timing and recovery come together — and can thus shift within a single day.
The common thread is co-metabolism: whether someone recovers and is ready, or gets stuck, arises from the interplay of DNA, microbiome, metabolites and lifestyle together. Readiness captures that whole in a readable snapshot. It does not tell you exactly what is going on, but it does tell you that the system is ready or first needs recovery — an invitation to plan rather than to force. This reading is supportive and observational — not a medical diagnosis.

- No. Fitness is broader and more stable; readiness is moment-bound and contextual. You can be fit and still have a day with low readiness.

- What is readiness read from?
