Definition The glucose response is the way your blood sugar behaves after eating: how high the peak is, how quickly it arrives and how deep the drop afterwards. A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) makes that curve visible. A crucial insight: the same meal produces very different curves in different people — the response is personal, not universal.

In plain language

A cyclist trains with a glucose sensor. After energy gels he sees sharp spikes, followed by deep crashes; in the closing stage he feels empty and irritable, despite eating enough. Why does one rider collapse while another stays stable? Because the way you process carbohydrates is personal. The same slice of bread, the same gel: for one person a flat curve, for another a spike-and-crash.

Those differences come partly from your digestive enzymes and partly from your microbiome, which helps determine how quickly carbohydrates are broken down and whether energy is held onto or wasted. Large spikes and crashes cost not only physical energy but also focus — the brain feels the dip too. A CGM shows that it is happening; understanding your own response shows why, and how you can keep your energy more stable with timing, fibre and food choices.

The science behind

Groundbreaking work in Cell and later Nature Metabolism showed that the glycemic response to identical meals varies greatly between individuals, and that the microbiome is an important predictor of that variation. Two people can respond in opposite ways to exactly the same bread. That undermines the idea of universal ‘good’ and ‘bad’ carbohydrates and shifts the focus to the personal response, measurable with a CGM.

Beneath the curve lie several layers. Digestive enzymes determine how quickly starch is broken down; the composition of the microbiome steers the fermentation of fibre and the production of SCFAs that help modulate glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity (Frontiers in Nutrition). Dysbiosis often goes hand in hand with larger spikes and deeper crashes during exertion. Moreover, microbial metabolites influence brain function: Cell Reports describes how fermentation products affect neurotransmitters, which helps explain the dip in focus during a sugar crash.

The common thread is co-metabolism: how stable someone’s energy remains arises from the interplay of DNA (enzyme and transporter variants), microbiome, metabolites and lifestyle (timing, fibre, exercise) together.
