A young player travels across six time zones and is back on the pitch two days later. His body is exhausted: sleep fragmented, concentration gone, muscles heavy. Why does one traveller recover in a day and another only after weeks? Because you have an internal clock that governs sleep, hormones and energy at set times. Travel quickly across time zones and melatonin and cortisol suddenly peak at the wrong moments.
What is often forgotten: your gut flora also has a day–night rhythm. After a long flight it stays ‘in the old time zone’ for a while, which makes your energy supply sluggish. Your chronotype — morning or evening person — also determines how hard jet lag hits. Standard tricks such as ‘setting your watch forward in advance’ are far from always enough. Those who know their own rhythm can use sleep, light, nutrition and timing more precisely to get back in step sooner.
The science behind
The central clock in the brain (the suprachiasmatic nucleus) synchronises peripheral clocks in almost every organ. Research shows that jet lag deeply disrupts the cortisol rhythm (Paragiola et al., 2021) and that athletic performance depends strongly on chronotype and circadian recovery (including reviews in the British Journal of Sports Medicine). Standard advice often turns out to be insufficient because it ignores individual clock sensitivity.
The microbiome, too, follows a circadian rhythm: the composition and activity of gut bacteria fluctuate over the course of the day, and that oscillation helps determine how nutrition is processed and energy is released. When time zones shift, this rhythm falls out of phase with the host clock and meal times, contributing to slow digestion, inflammatory signalling and fatigue. This is how chronobiology intertwines with the gut: jet lag is not simply ‘being tired’, but a temporary decoupling of several clocks at once, including that of your microbiome.
The common thread is co-metabolism: how quickly someone adapts arises from the interplay of DNA (clock genes, chronotype), microbiome, metabolites (melatonin, cortisol) and lifestyle (light, sleep, nutrition, timing) together. Chronotype colours the predisposition; targeted use of light, meal timing and recovery determines how smoothly the clocks re-synchronise. This reading is supportive and observational — not a medical diagnosis.
