Definition Migraine is more than a headache: it is a systemic condition in which nerve pathways, immune reactions, hormones and metabolism interact. Dietary triggers — from histamine-rich products to oxalates or nightshades — can provoke attacks via neuroinflammation around the trigeminal nerve, histamine peaks and shifts in the gut-brain axis.

In plain language

Migraine often feels random: throbbing headache, nausea and light sensitivity that appear without any clear reason. Medication relieves the pain, but the attacks keep coming. Yet there is more system to it than it seems. Migraine is not a pure ‘headache problem’, but a condition of the whole body in which nutrition, immune system and microbiome all play a part. Small inflammatory reactions around blood vessels can irritate the trigeminal nerve; histamine, released by mast cells, can amplify the headache; and an imbalance in the gut flora influences messenger substances such as serotonin that help regulate pain. As a result, a seemingly ‘healthy’ meal can be a trigger for one person and not for another. In this way migraine becomes something you can learn to understand: not entirely preventable, but with more grip on the patterns behind it.

The science behind

The pain phase of migraine is connected to neuroinflammation: small inflammatory reactions around blood vessels in the meninges activate the trigeminal nerve. Review research describes migraine as the result of an interplay of nerve pathways, immune reactions and hormones, rather than a single cause. Mast cells and histamine play an amplifying role in this: by releasing histamine around blood vessels and nerve endings, they can lower the threshold for an attack. That explains why histamine-rich food and alcohol reliably provoke symptoms in some people.

A second layer is the gut-brain axis. Research links changes in the gut microbiome to migraine with and without aura, among other things via effects on serotonin and pain modulation. In addition, disrupted energy metabolism — less efficient mitochondria — makes the brain more sensitive to attacks, which fits with the fatigue and the ‘empty’ feeling that surround attacks. Dietary triggers rarely act as a single switch: they lower the threshold within a system that is already under strain from sleep, stress, hormones and microbiome.

The common thread is co-metabolism: whether a meal becomes a trigger arises from the interplay of DNA, microbiome, metabolites and lifestyle together — not from a single food. Genetic predisposition (for example in histamine breakdown or energy routes) colours the sensitivity in the background, but the whole determines where and when the threshold is exceeded. This reading is supportive and observational — not a medical diagnosis.
